Asha Sobhana Earns Maiden ODI Call-Up for India’s Series Against South Africa

Indian cricket has witnessed a significant milestone as Keralite leg-spinner Asha Sobhana secures her maiden call-up to the national One-Day International (ODI) team for the upcoming series against South Africa. Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, the 33-year-old made headlines previously for becoming the oldest Indian woman to debut in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket during the recent tour of Bangladesh. Impressive performances in the T20Is have now propelled Asha into the ODI squad, marking a remarkable achievement in her cricketing journey.

The Women’s Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled India’s squads for the multi-format series against South Africa, slated to take place from June 13 to July 9 across various venues. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the team will engage in a Test match, three ODIs, and an equal number of T20Is. Notably, Smriti Mandhana will serve as Kaur’s deputy across all three formats, reflecting a strong leadership duo for the Indian side.

Furthermore, the series marks a significant return for Indian women’s cricket, with a Test match against South Africa scheduled at home after a decade-long hiatus. The one-off four-day Test will be held in Chennai from June 28 to July 1. The squad selections also feature the comeback of players like Shubha Satheesh, who impressed with her performance in the previous Test but had to miss subsequent matches due to injury. With the anticipation building up for this exciting series, fans eagerly await to witness Asha Sobhana’s prowess on the international stage as she represents India in the ODIs against South Africa.
