Tradition and Thrills Await: Nehru Trophy Boat Race Returns

The prestigious Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a much-awaited annual event in Kerala, is set to enthrall spectators once again on August 10th at Punnamada Lake. The decision to hold the 70th edition of the race was finalized during the executive committee meeting of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) Society. Last year’s event saw the Veeyupuram Chundan from the Pallathuruthy Boat Club clinching victory, continuing their winning streak for the fourth consecutive year. Notably, the race was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making this year’s event all the more anticipated. Drawing crowds of around two lakh people, including visitors from abroad, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race stands as a grand spectacle in the world of sports.

In 2023, the event witnessed a remarkable display of tradition and athleticism, with 72 boats, including 19 snake boats, participating in various categories. Innovations such as modern starting and photo-finish systems added to the excitement, ensuring fair competition and accurate results. Moreover, the NTBR took a significant step towards environmental conservation by adopting eco-friendly practices. Designated as a ‘green fest,’ the event saw the deployment of Haritha Karma Sena personnel to prevent the littering of plastics and other non-biodegradable materials, underscoring the organizers’ commitment to sustainability and responsible stewardship of the venue. As preparations for this year’s race gear up, anticipation mounts among enthusiasts eager to witness the thrilling spectacle of traditional boat racing amidst the serene waters of Punnamada Lake.
