Heavy Rain Alert in Kerala: Yellow Alert in Kannur

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rain in Kerala till Thursday, marking the onset of the southwest monsoon. A yellow alert has been issued for Kannur district on Monday, with predictions of light to moderate rainfall in several other districts including Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Thrissur. The IMD also forecasts thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in isolated areas till June 6.

The district authorities in Kottayam have initiated relief measures as heavy rains and floods have displaced 582 people from 182 families. Thirty-three relief camps have been set up across Kottayam, Kanjirappally, Vaikom, and Changanassery taluks. Due to the prevailing conditions, schools in Kottayam district will remain closed on Monday to accommodate relief operations. The state Disaster Management Authority has urged residents in hilly and low-lying areas to shift to safer places and cautioned against night travel through hilly terrain.

Additionally, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued a warning for high tidal waves along the Kerala coast, with waves reaching a height of 1.4-1.7 meters expected by 11:30 pm on Monday. Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to exercise caution in light of the rough sea conditions.
