Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Predicted in Kerala; Yellow Alert Issued for Several Districts

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continuing rainfall in North Kerala. Today, a yellow alert has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod. The IMD has also warned of heavy rain with thunder and lightning in isolated areas of Kerala over the coming days. Heavy rain is defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

Yellow Alert Schedule:

03-07-2024: Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

04-07-2024: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

05-07-2024: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

06-07-2024: Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

Thunderstorm Warning:

The IMD has also indicated the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning in isolated places in Kerala until July 5. Thunderstorms pose significant risks to both human and animal life, as well as to electrical and communication networks and household appliances. Precautions should be taken as soon as cloud formation is observed, as lightning may not always be visible.

Being in open areas increases the risk of lightning strikes. During high winds and thunderstorms, it is advisable to keep windows and doors closed, stay away from them, remain indoors, and avoid contact with walls and floors. Unplug household appliances and avoid using electrical devices during thunderstorms. Children should be kept indoors and away from terraces, especially if the weather appears cloudy.
