Indian liquor manufacturers are contemplating a move to request the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to establish a distinct standard for Indian single malt whisky. This initiative comes as homegrown single malt brands continue to rise in global prominence, driven by the growing demand for premium products.
Indian single malt whisky has earned accolades worldwide, clinching prestigious international awards and establishing itself as a significant player in the global spirits market. Currently exported to over 60 countries, Indian single malts have become a symbol of the country’s evolving premium liquor segment.
The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) is actively discussing the potential benefits of a separate regulatory framework for Indian single malts. Establishing such standards would not only safeguard the authenticity and quality of the product but also further bolster its reputation in the global market.
The move aligns with the broader trend of premiumisation in the alcoholic beverage industry, where consumers are increasingly favoring high-quality, well-crafted spirits. By setting clear FSSAI standards for Indian single malt whisky, the industry aims to ensure consistent quality, protect the interests of producers, and maintain its competitive edge in international markets. A dedicated standard for Indian single malt whisky could also pave the way for innovation within the industry, encouraging producers to experiment while adhering to a benchmark of excellence. This will strengthen India’s position as a global whisky hub, ensuring the nation’s products remain synonymous with superior craftsmanship and premium quality.
