Kozhikode: In the last 45 days, Kerala has recorded 82 deaths due to leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection, according to data released by the state’s Health Department. The figures, covering the period from August 1 to September 19, also reveal a total of 664 confirmed cases. Kozhikode district has been hit hardest, reporting 18 deaths and 80 cases, while other affected districts include Palakkad with 12 fatalities, Malappuram with 10, and both Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur registering 9 deaths each. Notably, Thiruvananthapuram saw the highest number of infections, with 128 confirmed cases.
Leptospirosis, caused by the Leptospira bacteria, is primarily spread through contact with contaminated water, often after heavy rains when stagnant water allows the bacteria to thrive. The infection can enter the body through open wounds, posing a serious health risk, particularly for those who delay treatment. Dr. E. Danish, an assistant professor at Kozhikode Medical College, pointed out that self-medication is a common issue, which can delay appropriate care and increase the risk of fatal outcomes.
With about 10% of cases at high risk of death without timely treatment, health officials have emphasized the importance of prevention. Recommendations include avoiding contaminated water, wearing protective boots, and taking doxycycline as a preventive measure. The rise in cases highlights the urgent need for public awareness and timely medical intervention.
