Malappuram: The Kerala Women’s Commission has initiated a suo moto investigation into the death of Shahana Mumtaz, a young woman from Kondotty, who was discovered hanging in her bedroom. Allegations have surfaced that Shahana endured harassment from her husband and in-laws, primarily over her dark skin tone, which may have contributed to her untimely demise.
Adv. P. Satheedevi, Chairperson of the Kerala Women’s Commission, has instructed the commission’s director and the local Circle Inspector to formally register the case. A detailed police report has also been requested to aid the inquiry. Shahana’s burial took place on Wednesday morning at Jumamasjid in Kondotty, following the arrival of her father, who works abroad.
Kondotty Deputy Superintendent of Police K.C. Sethu is leading the investigation. Forensic experts have examined Shahana’s residence, and police have collected statements from her parents, Parassery Basheer and Shameena, as well as other family members.
Shahana had married Abdul Wahid on May 27, 2024. Merely 20 days into their marriage, Wahid departed for work abroad. Her family has alleged that she faced consistent criticism and abuse from Wahid and his relatives, who reportedly demeaned her due to her complexion and limited proficiency in English. This tragic incident sheds light on the deeply ingrained prejudices still prevalent in society and highlights the urgent need for stringent measures to combat domestic harassment and discrimination.
