India Witnesses Remarkable 161% Surge in Tiger Population, Going from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022: Government Report

New Delhi : In a significant revelation provided to the Parliament on Monday, the Indian government shared that the tiger population in the country has experienced a remarkable increase, rising from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022, marking an astonishing growth of 161%. This data was presented by Union Minister of Culture G Kishan Reddy in a written response during a Lok Sabha session.

The statement was made in response to a query about the designation of certain birds, flowers, and animals as national symbols and the measures taken to protect their special status in consideration of the sentiments of the general public.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC) informed that the tiger and peacock had been recognized as the ‘National Animal’ and ‘National Bird’ respectively. However, due to discrepancies in the official records, these notifications were reissued on May 30, 2011, ensuring their official recognition.

The tiger and peacock have been accorded the highest level of protection under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, as they are included in Schedule-I animals. This designation grants them extensive safeguards against hunting, and their critical habitats have also been declared as Protected Areas, as highlighted in the minister’s response.

Minister Reddy emphasized that the tiger population’s positive trend has been evident, with their numbers increasing from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022.
