Fuel Leak from Manipur Power Station Raises Environmental Concerns

A fuel leak from the Leimakhong power station in Manipur’s Imphal valley has raised environmental concerns as the spilled substance entered streams flowing alongside the station. The incident, occurring on Wednesday night in Kangpokpi district, particularly impacted streams passing through villages like Kanto Sabal and Sekmai. These streams eventually converge into the Imphal river, a critical lifeline for the region. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has swiftly directed relevant departments to take immediate action to avert an environmental calamity, utilizing available resources in terms of machinery, manpower, and expertise.

Efforts have been made to mitigate the impact, with heavy machinery deployed to divert the water flow in the affected streams towards fields. The authorities are actively investigating whether the fuel leak was accidental or caused by miscreants. The spilled fuel not only poses a threat to aquatic life but also endangers communities relying on these streams for their daily chores, as highlighted by local residents. The gravity of the situation emphasizes the need for prompt action to assess and address the environmental implications of the fuel leak in Manipur.
