As India’s first water metro approaches its one-year anniversary milestone on April 25, the achievements of this innovative project are already making waves. With over 18 lakh passengers having experienced the water metro since its inception, it has not only revolutionized transportation in Kochi but has also become a sought-after attraction for tourists.

Operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the water metro has set ambitious plans for the future, aiming to expand its services to cater to tourists and commuters alike. The success of the project has sparked interest from other states, with possibilities emerging for similar implementations in 40 cities, including Kollam.

As of April 11, the water metro has seen an average of 6721 passengers daily, a number expected to surge to 10,000 during the upcoming summer holidays. Within just six months of operation, passenger numbers crossed the 10 lakh mark, showcasing the growing popularity of this mode of transport.

With nine terminals currently operational and plans underway for additional terminals, including those at popular tourist spots like Fort Kochi, the water metro is poised for further expansion. Boasting state-of-the-art boats constructed at the Kochi shipyard, the project promises enhanced connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors alike.

As the water metro continues to chart its course towards success, it remains a shining example of innovative urban transportation solutions, ushering in a new era of sustainable mobility in Kochi and beyond.
