Caution: Possibility of Three-Day Thunderstorms with Lightning and Rain – Safety Measures Advised

IMD has issued a warning about the potential occurrence of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in isolated areas of the state. The weather forecast indicates that this weather pattern is likely to persist from August 20 to 22. Fishing activities are expected to be unaffected along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.

On August 20, strong winds reaching speeds of 45 to 55 km/h, with occasional gusts up to 65 km/h, could impact the South Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, adjacent Kanyakumari region, and the southwestern Bay of Bengal along the Sri Lankan coast.

Precautions

Thunderstorms pose significant risks, causing harm to people, animals, electrical and communication systems, and appliances connected to electricity. To ensure safety, the public should adhere to the following precautions as soon as clouds become visible. These precautions remain vital even when lightning isn’t apparent.

• Seek indoor shelter immediately at the first indication of lightning. Staying outdoors increases the chances of lightning strikes. • Close windows and doors, and avoid standing near them during periods of strong winds and lightning. Stay inside, minimizing contact with walls and floors. • Disconnect household appliances, and avoid proximity to electrical devices during thunderstorms. • Avoid using landline telephones; mobile phones are safe to use. • If the weather is cloudy, discourage children from playing outdoors or on terraces. • Avoid standing beneath trees and parking vehicles under them. • Stay inside vehicles during thunderstorms, keeping all body parts within. Seek shelter in buildings if on bicycles, motorcycles, or tractors. • Avoid collecting clothes from terraces or yards during rain or thunderstorms. • Secure loose items that could be blown away by the wind. • Refrain from bathing and water collection during thunderstorms, as lightning could travel through pipes. • Avoid fishing or swimming during thunderstorms. Cease fishing and boating as soon as clouds appear. Do not stay on boat decks. Suspend baiting and netting. • Avoid kite flying during thunderstorms. • Sitting on high places like terraces or trees during thunderstorms is hazardous. • Avoid leaving domestic animals tethered outside. If tied, untie them and ensure secure shelter when rain clouds are present to prevent lightning strikes. • In open areas without nearby buildings, assume a crouched position with feet together and head between knees. • Install lightning conductors on buildings and surge protectors for electrical appliances to safeguard against lightning. • Lightning strikes can result in burns, vision/hearing loss, or heart attacks. Remember that lightning doesn’t create electric currents in the body. Administer first aid promptly within the first 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Seek immediate medical help for lightning strike victims.
