Tamil Nadu Rain Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 10, Urgent Relief Measures Underway

Heavy rainfall has led to severe consequences in Tamil Nadu, resulting in a tragic death toll of 10 individuals due to a wall collapse. The ongoing rain prompted authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in affected districts like Tirunelveli and Tenkasi. Furthermore, officials announced disruptions in train traffic in southern districts, providing information on canceled and delayed trains. Notably, the Nagercoil-Kanyakumari Express special train service stands fully canceled.

Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena shared that the deceased are from districts such as Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. In response to the crisis, a specialized team from the Indian Army has been deployed to Srivaikuntam for relief operations. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise him of the grave situation. Stalin submitted a request to declare the heavy rains and resulting damage in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu as a national disaster, seeking urgent relief for the affected population.

Stalin informed the media about plans to seek funds from the National Disaster Relief Fund for emergency relief, emphasizing the state’s consecutive calamities. He conveyed the intention to request the Prime Minister for swift fund release, specifying a request for Rs 7,300 crores as aid and Rs 12,000 crores as permanent assistance. Additionally, Rs 6,000 relief for flood victims has been announced and is underway, awaiting completion upon receiving the designated funds from the Prime Minister. The situation remains critical, with concerted efforts directed towards providing immediate aid and long-term support to those affected by the devastating consequences of the heavy rainfall.
