Noida Airport Set to Pose Stiff Challenge to Delhi IGIA; Here’s Why

Air travelers heading to Delhi might soon find their journeys redirected through Noida, as a new airport project in Uttar Pradesh poses a potential challenge to the established Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi. The ongoing construction of the Noida airport, located just 72 km away from the Delhi airport, is expected to offer lower ticket rates, becoming a magnet for budget-conscious travelers.

Ticket rates at the Noida airport are anticipated to be 10% to 15% lower than those at the Delhi airport. For instance, a flight ticket from Noida to Lucknow might cost around Rs. 2,800, compared to Rs. 3,500 from Delhi. The greater the distance traveled, the more significant the reduction in ticket prices, making Noida an attractive option for budget travelers. The Uttar Pradesh government’s strategic move to exempt VAT for airline turbine fuel has also contributed to the airport’s appeal. Authorities believe that the potential increase in passenger numbers will offset the revenue loss caused by the VAT exemption. The construction company behind the Noida airport is confident about recovering the expenditure within six years.

The airport’s construction is expected to be completed by February, with services commencing by October. On the day of its inauguration, 65 flights are expected to take off from the airport. Situated on 1,334 hectares in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, the airport is strategically located 40 km from Noida and 130 km from Agra. Plans are also in place for a metro rail system connecting Noida Airport to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, enhancing its connectivity and appeal to travelers.
