Rising Menace: Malayalis in Kerala Losing Rs 15 Crores Monthly to Online Frauds

Malayalis in Kerala are grappling with the increasing menace of online fraud, suffering an estimated monthly loss of approximately Rs 15 crores, averaging around Rs 50 lakhs per day. The state has witnessed a surge in cybercrime cases, with over 50 incidents being reported on a single day. Scammers employ various tactics, including exploiting One-Time Passwords (OTPs), deceiving victims through video chat applications, and setting up fake websites. Authorities stress the importance of filing complaints promptly, as victims who report incidents within the first hour have a higher likelihood of recovering their entire amount. Despite this, only 40 percent of complaints are lodged within the crucial timeframe. To combat the growing threat of cybercrime, new appointments will be made in the cyber division department, and a dedicated building for the cyber division is slated to be established by the end of February. This facility will house cyberdomes, cyber police stations, hi-tech crime inquiry cells, and drone forensic labs.
