Central Government Eases Aadhaar Guidelines: Now Obtainable Without Fingerprints

The central government has revised Aadhaar guidelines to accommodate individuals unable to provide fingerprints, marking a significant change in the enrollment process. Previously, both fingerprint and iris scans were deemed necessary for Aadhaar issuance, but the rule has now been modified.

Under the new guidelines, individuals unable to provide fingerprints can obtain Aadhaar through iris scans. Conversely, those unable to undergo an iris scan will require only fingerprints for enrollment. Those who face challenges in both aspects can still enroll, with their names and photographs documented in the software. Such cases will be treated as extraordinary enrollments, and Aadhaar will be issued accordingly. The central government has emphasized the need for adequate training for Aadhaar Enrollment Operators to implement these changes.

This alteration in rules was prompted by the case of Joseymol from Kottayam Kumarakam, who was denied Aadhaar due to her small fingers, making fingerprinting difficult. Union Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar intervened, directing immediate Aadhaar issuance to Joseymol. Subsequently, the Unique Identification Authority of India visited Joseymol’s home in Kumarakam, providing her with an Aadhaar number.
