Distribution of Exclusive Onam Kits to 600,000 Yellow Card Holders

In the current situation, the distribution of Onam kits is specifically intended for Anthyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY – Yellow) cardholders and individuals residing in welfare institutions. This conclusion was reached during a recent cabinet meeting in response to the ongoing severe economic crisis.

Among the 9.3 million ration card holders in the state, approximately 588,691 people with AAY cards and around 20,000 residents of various welfare institutions will receive these complimentary kits. The overall distribution will encompass a total of 607,691 kits. An initial allocation of 320 million rupees will be provided to Supplyco for effectively distributing these kits, which will be carried out through ration shops.

In the previous year, an Onam kit containing 13 items was distributed to individuals with blue and white ration cards in the state. This time, the included items are different. About 8.7 million individuals received the Onam kit last year, as reported by the Civil Supplies Department. The initiation of food kit distribution to the entire population was introduced as a response to the COVID-19 crisis, and this initiative was seen as a contributing factor to the continued governance of the Pinarayi administration. Initially, there was a disagreement between the finance and civil supplies departments regarding the selection of products to be included in this year’s Onam kit.
