Earthquake Strikes Andaman Sea: NCS Monitors Seismic Activity

The Andaman Sea experienced an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 03:20 AM at a depth of 10 km. This incident follows similar seismic activity recorded in September when the Andaman Sea was struck by two earthquakes of magnitudes 4.4 and 4.3, respectively. The NCS, the primary agency of the Government of India for earthquake monitoring, had earlier reported these events, emphasizing the region’s susceptibility to such occurrences.

In a tragic parallel event, a powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake rocked western Afghanistan, causing significant devastation. The disaster claimed several lives, with varying estimates from different sources. The United Nations initially reported 320 casualties, although the figure was still under verification. Local authorities cited around 100 fatalities and 500 injuries, adding that 465 houses were destroyed, and 135 sustained damage. Rescue efforts are underway, with concerns of individuals being trapped beneath collapsed structures in the affected villages of the Zenda Jan district in Herat province.

The NCS remains vigilant, continuously monitoring seismic activities in the Andaman Sea, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and response strategies in earthquake-prone regions.
