Concerns Arise Over Canadian Diplomats’ Departure from India: US State Department Calls for Vienna Convention Adherence

The United States has voiced its apprehension about the exit of Canadian diplomats from India and has called on India to honor its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. This concern arises from a recent diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, leading to Canada withdrawing 41 diplomats after India threatened to remove their diplomatic immunity. The disagreement revolves around the contentious issue of a Sikh separatist’s killing.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of diplomats being present on the ground for resolving disputes. He urged the Indian government not to insist on reducing Canada’s diplomatic presence and to collaborate with Canada’s ongoing investigation. India, however, rejected Canada’s portrayal of the situation as a breach of international norms. The Ministry of External Affairs asserted that ensuring mutual diplomatic parity aligns perfectly with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned India’s decision to revoke the diplomatic immunity of the 41 Canadian diplomats. He labeled it a violation of the Vienna Convention and expressed concern, emphasizing that such actions should be alarming for all countries involved in international diplomacy.
