Intensifying Monsoons Cause Widespread Flooding in Kerala: Yellow Alert Issued in Nine Districts

In Kerala, the monsoon season has escalated, leading to extensive flooding across the state. Heavy rainfall, which commenced last night, continues in several regions, particularly in South Central Kerala. Areas like Thiruvananthapuram, Manacaud, Ulloor, and Vellayani have experienced severe flooding, with homes submerged and roads, including Chakkai and Pattoor, submerged. Rural areas have not been spared, facing inundation as well.

Similar situations are reported in Ernakulam, where roads in Kaloor, M G Road, and Edaplly are waterlogged, disrupting transportation. Ranni in Pathanamthitta also witnesses heavy rainfall, resulting in water entering residences. The intensified rains are attributed to cyclonic circulation in the South East Arabian Sea and Central East Arabian Sea. The Central Meteorological Department predicts moderate to heavy rains with thunder and lightning in the state over the next five days, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph until October 18.

The meteorological department has issued yellow alerts for various districts, indicating a possibility of isolated heavy rains. These alerts are as follows:

October 15, 2023: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.

October 16, 2023: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

October 18, 2023: Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, and Wayanad.

Hilly regions are particularly vulnerable due to these alerts, and low-lying areas, as well as urban centers, might experience waterlogging. Vigilance from the public and government bodies is crucial to handle the situation effectively.
