Malarikkal: A Year-Round Haven for Travel Enthusiasts in Central Kerala

Nestled amidst the picturesque backwaters of central Kerala, Malarikkal in Kottayam unfolds its captivating charm to travelers, transforming with the rhythm of each season. In the monsoon, the village becomes a sprawling water expanse, transitioning to a canvas adorned with water lilies in spring. As summer arrives, the vibrant blossoms give way to lush green paddy fields. Initially a local tourism initiative, Malarikkal has embarked on a journey to establish itself as a year-round destination. A three-day festival showcasing village tourism, local traditions, culinary culture, and art forms has become a significant part of this endeavor.

Organized on a 2000-acre paddy field, the festival highlights the legacy of the water lily festival, drawing visitors with its scenic sunsets and local delicacies featuring freshwater fish. With the support of Thiruvarp Panchayat, the River re-linking program, Malarikal Tourism Society, and local cooperatives, Malarikkal aims to contribute to the proposed water sports tourism circuit in Kottayam’s backwater landscape. The recent bridge construction has improved connectivity, while efforts are made to train locals in tourism entrepreneurship and market Malarikkal as a distinctive destination. The village’s growth aligns with the restoration of the region’s water bodies, showcasing a commitment to sustainable tourism development.
