Kerala Youth Commission Undertakes Pioneering Study on Youth Suicide, Submits Comprehensive Report

In response to the rising concern of suicidal tendencies among the youth, the Kerala Youth Commission has spearheaded a groundbreaking scientific study aimed at fortifying mental health. The comprehensive report resulting from this study has been submitted to the government, marking a significant step towards addressing the critical issue.

The initiative, which commenced on November 20, sought to enhance mental well-being among youngsters and curb the prevalence of suicide cases. Focusing on individuals aged 18 to 45, the study delved into over 800 suicide cases over a five-year period. An expert team, with the assistance of more than 195 Master of Social Work (MSW) and Psychology students, meticulously collected and analyzed data from all districts.

The chairman of the Youth Commission emphasized that the primary objective of the study is to conduct a detailed analysis of suicide cases and formulate viable solutions to prevent individuals from succumbing to such circumstances. This groundbreaking report is the first of its kind to be presented to the government, reflecting the commission’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges among the youth.

Looking ahead, the Youth Commission plans to undertake extensive follow-up activities in response to the study’s findings. Suicide prevention seminars are slated to be organized in all districts and universities, fostering awareness and providing valuable insights. A national seminar is also on the horizon, scheduled to take place in Thiruvananthapuram on January 3 and February 1.

By initiating this scientific study and presenting the comprehensive report, the Kerala Youth Commission is not only raising awareness about the critical issue of youth suicide but also taking proactive steps towards implementing effective preventive measures and support systems for the well-being of the youth in the state.
