Vir Das Clinches First International Emmy Award for Best Comedy, Ekta Kapoor Honored with Directorate Award

In a historic achievement, actor-comedian Vir Das secured the first International Emmy Award for India in the Best Comedy category for his Netflix stand-up special “Vir Das: Landing.” Held at the New York Hilton Midtown, the 51st International Emmy Awards Gala recognized Das’s remarkable work. He shared the accolade with the British teen sitcom “Derry Girls” Season Three. Expressing gratitude, Das dedicated the honor to India, emphasizing the celebration of diverse stories and voices from the country. This award marks Das’s second nomination and maiden win in the International Emmy Awards.

Renowned producer Ektaa R Kapoor was honored with the International Emmy Directorate Award for her significant contributions to the world of arts and entertainment. Kapoor, the co-founder of Balaji Telefilms, became the first Indian woman filmmaker to receive this prestigious recognition. Kapoor expressed delight at being acknowledged on a global scale, thanking the audience for their love and support throughout her journey in television, films, and OTT platforms.

The International Emmy Awards also saw nominations for Indian artists Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh. Shefali Shah, nominated for her role in the Netflix series “Delhi Crime,” competed in the Best Actress category but lost to Mexican star Karla Souza. Jim Sarbh, nominated for his portrayal of Indian nuclear physicist Homi Bhabha in the SonyLIV series “Rocket Boys,” faced tough competition in the Best Actor category but did not secure the win.
