Demographic Shifts: Concerns Rise as Kerala Witnesses Decline in Birth Rates

Once a trailblazer in literacy, healthcare, and educational achievements, Kerala is grappling with unexpected changes in the era of globalization. The state, known for its diaspora contributing significantly to its economy, is facing a decline in remittances from abroad. Additionally, there is a growing trend of sending children overseas for education, and the returning workforce is diminishing. The state’s job market is now seeing an influx of laborers from other states, raising concerns about the declining Malayali population.

A headline by correspondent KS Aravind, “Sharp Decline in Birth Rate in Kerala,” sheds light on a pressing issue. Over the past decade, there has been a 25% reduction in the number of births, with Ernakulam experiencing a 46% decrease and Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Kannur witnessing a 37% decline. Factors contributing to this decline include young couples delaying childbirth until securing government jobs and individuals avoiding pregnancy due to aspirations of migrating abroad.

This demographic shift raises alarm bells for the future, anticipating a significant decrease in the new generation in the coming years. The potential consequences include increased loneliness among adults, a rise in nursing homes, and a decrease in the number of schools. The government is urged to conduct a comprehensive study to understand the reasons behind the youth’s inclination to settle in economically and socially advanced Western countries. Addressing issues like low wages and limited high-paying opportunities is crucial to retaining the population and ensuring a sustainable future for Kerala, especially considering the current demographic composition, with around 45 lakh people aged over 60 in the state.
