Blanket distribution event ends in tragedy; 3 dead in stampede

Three women were killed and five others were injured in a stampede that resulted from overcrowding at a blanket distribution event in West Burdwan district attended by West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place minutes after Suvendu Adhikari left the venue after his speech. The event was organised by former Asansol mayor and BJP leader Jitendra Tewari. Adhikari was the chief guest at the event. The injured have been rushed to Asansol district hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.
According to sources in the Asansol police, the BJP had not taken permission for the event.
