Kerala Takes the Lead: 21 Railway Stations Secure Eat Right Certificates for Safe Food and Hygiene

In a notable achievement, 21 railway stations in Kerala have been awarded the prestigious Eat Right Certificate, emphasizing their commitment to safe food consumption and hygiene. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) bestows this certification upon railway stations adhering to standardized food storage and hygiene practices.

Out of the total 7,349 railway stations in India, including halt stations, only one percent receives the Eat Right Certificate. Kerala, with 199 railway stations, stands out with 21 stations meeting the stringent criteria for ensuring safe food practices.

The primary objective of the certification is to guarantee the provision of safe, nutritionally valuable, and hygienic food to passengers. Catering units within the stations, including stalls, are subjected to evaluation based on parameters such as water quality, cleanliness, sanitation, maintenance of registers, pest control, and inspection of food items. Regular inspections are conducted to verify compliance with these standards. Training sessions are also provided to workers, including those in catering units. The Eat Right Certificate holds validity for two years following the final audit.

While many stations and establishments are yet to apply for this certification, inspection procedures are actively underway in some stations. The endeavor reflects a collective commitment to ensuring the well-being of passengers by upholding high standards of food safety and hygiene.
