Chennai Police have arrested a contract worker for the death of a Covid patient in a hospital.

Greater Chennai Police arrested a woman contract worker at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital on Tuesday for allegedly killing a patient whose body was discovered in the Covid ward days after he went missing.

Rathi Devi, from Thiruvottiyur, strangled Sunitha (41) to death after wheeling her from the third floor of Tower 3 to the eighth floor. According to the police, Rathi Devi stole Rs 9,500 and a mobile phone from Sunitha.

Sunitha, from West Tambaram, was admitted on May 21 due to Covid and mysteriously vanished two days later. Sunitha’s husband Mouli, who works as a faculty member in an Andhra Pradesh private college, was informed by the hospital that she was missing.

Mouli filed a missing person’s report at the hospital complex’s C4 police station on May 31. On June 8, Sunitha’s decomposed body was discovered on the eighth floor of Tower 3.

The body was returned to Mouli following the post-mortem examination. According to Indianexpress.com, C4 police are analysing CCTV footage and questioning healthcare workers.

The police discovered that Rathi Devi took Sunitha away in a wheelchair and went up in an emergency lift before committing the crime to seize her money under the guise of scanning. She dumped the body near the eighth-floor stairwell.
