Milkha Singh, “The Flying Sikh,” died at the age of 91 as a result of post-covid complications.

Milkha Singh, a legendary Indian sprinter, died on Friday as a result of post-Covid complications. At the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, he was receiving treatment. The 91-year-old had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 19 but was placed in home isolation after revealing that he was asymptomatic at his Chandigarh residence. However, on May 24, the legendary athlete was admitted to the Fortis hospital’s ICU in Mohali due to “COVID pneumonia.” On June 3, he was transferred to PGIMER in Chandigarh.

His death occurred five days after his wife Nirmal died as a result of post-Covid complications.

“It is with great sadness that we must inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away on June 18, 2021 at 11.30 p.m.,” his family said in a statement.

He “was treated for Covid there until the 13th of June when, after a valiant battle with Covid, Milkha Singh Ji tested negative,” the hospital said in a statement.

“However, due to post-Covid complications, he was transferred from Covid Hospital to a medical ICU. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Milkha Singh ji was unable to be rescued from his critical condition, and after a valiant fight, he passed away at 11.30 p.m. on June 18, 2021, here at PGIMER “Added the statement.

“He fought hard, but God has his ways,” the statement continued, “and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmal Ji and now Dad passed away in a matter of 5 days.”

“We have lost a giant sportsperson in Shri Milkha Singh Ji, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His uplifting personality endeared him to a large number of people. Bereft of words as a result of his death, “PM Modi sent out a tweet.

Milkha Singh, also known as the ‘Flying Sikh,’ made a name for himself in track and field, winning four gold medals at the Asian Games. He also took home a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958.

In the 1960 Rome Olympics, he finished fourth in the 400m final, just missing out on an Olympic medal.

Milkha Singh crossed the finish line in 45.73 seconds. It remained a national record for nearly 40 years before being surpassed in 1998 by Paramjeet Singh.

Milkha Singh had also competed in the Olympics in 1956 and 1964. In 1959, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour.
