Serena Williams retired from her 1st round Wimbledon match with injury

Wimbledon: Serena Williams is out of Wimbledon after suffering a left leg injury in the first set of her first-round match on Tuesday.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion was serving in the fifth game of her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Centre Court when she lost her footing near the baseline while hitting a forehand.

Williams winced and took cautious steps between points, clearly distressed. She took a medical timeout after losing that game and attempted to play again.

Williams, who was crying, bit her upper lip and covered her face between points. The audience attempted to offer encouragement and support.
The 39-year-old American eventually dropped to her knees, and the chair umpire came over to check on her.

Williams then walked up to the net to shake hands with Sasnovich before conceding with the score at 3-all, 15-30.

Williams raised her right arm and rested her left palm on her chest. She then waved to the onlookers.
Officially, it will be only Williams’ second first-round Grand Slam exit in her career.

She is a seven-time All England Club singles champion, most recently in 2016. Williams was also the runner-up at Wimbledon the last two years, in 2018 and 2019, before the tournament was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
