PM Modi Announces Ambitious Goal: India Aiming to Host 2036 Olympic Games

In a significant announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the government’s ambitious goal to host the 2036 Olympic Games, emphasizing a vision to position India as the hub of the global sports ecosystem. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Khelo India Youth Games 2023, where PM Modi highlighted the transformative journey of Indian sports in the last decade.

PM Modi celebrated the success of Indian athletes in recent international events, including the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, Asian Games, and Asian Para Games. He credited the positive shift in sports performance to the comprehensive reforms and support provided by the government. Stressing the importance of sports in shaping the nation’s identity, the PM affirmed the government’s commitment to making India a top sporting nation.

The Khelo India initiative, a key component of this strategy, aims to fulfill the dreams of youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. PM Modi highlighted the role of local-level tournaments and sports infrastructure development in promoting sporting talent at the grassroots level. He noted that India has successfully hosted various international sporting events, contributing to the growth of sports tourism.

The government’s efforts extend beyond the playing field, focusing on the sports economy. PM Modi expressed determination to elevate India’s sports industry, projecting it to touch nearly Rs one lakh crore in the coming years. The New Education Policy includes sports as an essential curriculum, creating awareness and encouraging the youth to consider sports as a viable career option.

As part of the government’s commitment to self-sufficiency, PM Modi emphasized the development of sports equipment manufacturing and related sectors. The Khelo India initiative not only builds sports infrastructure but also serves as a catalyst for employment opportunities, especially for the youth.

In his vision for India’s sporting future, PM Modi announced plans to host the 2029 Youth Olympics and the 2036 Olympics, aiming to showcase the country’s capability to organize and conduct major global sporting events. The focus on creating a self-sustained sports ecosystem aligns with PM Modi’s broader economic goals, ensuring a promising future for the youth associated with sports and allied industries.

The announcement comes as part of PM Modi’s three-day visit to Tamil Nadu, where he inaugurated the Khelo India Youth Games and launched projects related to the broadcasting sector. The visit also includes worship at temples in the state before heading to Ayodhya for the consecration of the Ram Mandir on January 22.
