Idukki Faces Agricultural Losses Amidst Heavy Rains and Landslides

Idukki, the high-range district of Kerala, experienced significant agricultural losses as over an acre of farmland succumbed to landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains. The incident, which occurred late last night in the Nedumkandam area, also caused damage to a portion of the road leading to the region. Panchayat officials confirmed that minor landslides were reported in a couple of other places as well. Despite the severity of the landslides, there were no reports of injuries or damaged homes, providing a small relief amid the disaster.

The affected area, specifically the 20th ward of the panchayat, is now grappling with the aftermath. Steps are underway to clear the debris, an essential measure to restore normalcy. This incident, the officials noted, underscores the area’s vulnerability to landslides, especially since the devastating floods of 2018. Even minor rainfall has been triggering such events, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the region.

Adding to the concerns, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert in several districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Palakkad. A ‘yellow alert’ signifies the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging from 6 to 11 cm, indicating the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in these vulnerable regions.
