Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is in stable condition in hospital after collapsing during their Euro 2020 opener against Finland on Saturday, according to the Danish Football Association.

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is in a stable position in hospital after he collapsed during their Euro 2020 opener with Finland on Saturday, the Danish Football Association has confirmed.

Shortly before halfway through group B, the former Tottenham playmaker dropped to the floor in the Parken stadium to let players of both teams go into a clear plight.

Anthony Taylor, the English arbiter, immediately called the pitch physicians, and Eriksen had long-lasting compression on the Inter Milan Player’s head before he was admitted to the hospital.

The Danish Football Association subsequently provided an update on the condition of the 29-year-old and revealed that Saturday night would be over. In a match overshadowed by the incident, Finland went on to win 1-0.

A statement reads: “Christian Eriksen is awake and stable. He is still hospitalised for further examinations at Rigshospitalet.

“The match against Finland will be played tonight (Saturday). This happened after the players had it confirmed that Christian is okay. The match resumes at 20.30 (19.30 BST).”

UEFA confirmed players from both sides requested the Group B encounter be finished, which was goalless just before halftime.

“Following the request made by players of both teams, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET,” a statement said.

“The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a five-minute half-time break followed by the second half.”

First of all, Eriksen collapsed as he hurried in the corner flag in the middle of Finland and his teammates formed a shield around the midfield during treatment.

Following the pitch on a stretcher being worn, fans chanted the name of Eriksen inside the stadium in Copenhagen at a time of unity.

“Moments like this put everything in life into perspective,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said. I wish Christian a full and speedy recovery and pray for the strength and faith of his family.

“At these times, the unity of the football family is so strong and he and his family carry with them the good wishes and prayers of everyone.

“I heard of fans of both teams chanting his name. Football is beautiful and Christian plays it beautifully.”

Eriksen’s club side Inter Milan said on Twitter: “Forza Chris, all of our thoughts are with you” and former team Tottenham added: “Get well soon Christian. The whole Spurs family is with you.”

Denmark’s match against Iceland resumed after a nearly 90-minute delay, with both teams welcomed back onto the Parken Stadium pitch to rousing applause. In 59 minutes, Joel Pohjanpalo scored the game’s only goal, giving Finland a surprise victory in the finals.

Denmark’s head coach, Kasper Hjulmand, was in tears at the post-match press conference, admitting that the experience had been traumatic for everyone.

He said: “It was a tough evening, on which we’ve all been reminded what the most important things in life are. It’s meaningful relationships. It’s those people who are close to us. It’s family and friends.

“Everything, everything, everything – all thoughts are with Christian and his family.”
