Alert for Expatriates: Restrictions on Check-in Baggage Items for India-UAE Flights

Expatriates traveling from India to the UAE, a route frequented by a large number of Indians for business, tourism, and employment, must take note of new regulations regarding their check-in baggage. Authorities have released a list of items that are now strictly prohibited in flights between these two countries. This crackdown follows a surge in cases of rejected baggage at Mumbai International Airport due to passengers carrying banned items.

Some frequently found prohibited items in check-in baggage include dried coconut (copra), crackers, matchboxes, paint, camphor, ghee, pickles, and other oily food items. Additionally, passengers are cautioned against bringing e-cigarettes, lighters, power banks, and spray bottles, all of which pose potential risks.

Dried coconut, in particular, has been a cause for concern. Despite being added to the list of banned items by India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in March 2022, many passengers remain unaware of the prohibition. Dried coconut contains a high amount of oil, making it susceptible to causing fires or explosions.

The rejection rate of check-in baggage compared to the total number of screened bags has seen a significant increase, rising from 0.31% in December 2022 to 0.73% in May 2023 at Mumbai Airport. This spike emphasizes the need for greater awareness among passengers regarding prohibited and dangerous items during air travel.

Authorities have urged travelers to familiarize themselves with the guidelines issued by airports or airlines concerning restricted items. Staying informed about these regulations is crucial to ensure a smooth travel experience and maintain flight safety standards.
