Uthradam: Prelude to Onam Celebrations for Malayalees

Malayalees are poised to embrace the spirit of Onam as they observe Uthradam today. The preparations for the upcoming Thiruvonam celebration are in full swing, rendering the roads of Kerala bustling with activity.

Uthradam marks the onset of the festive season, known as 1st Onam. The actual Thiruvonam celebration follows Uthradam. Often referred to as the Children’s Onam, Uthradam witnesses youngsters reveling at home, while adults engage in the final arrangements for the Thiruvonam festivities. This phase is referred to as Utratapachil.

Uthradam serves as the day when Malayalees shop for all the necessities essential to commemorate Thiruvonam. The requisites for the kitchen are typically procured, to be utilized on the subsequent day. Also, Uthradam is the occasion to create the grandest flower arrangement, which remains displayed until Thiruvanna day. On Thiruvonam day, the revered Thrikakarayappan deity is enshrined within this elaborate flower bed.
