Tamil Superstar Vijay’s Political Ascent: Vijay Makkal Iyakkam Transforms into a Political Party

Tamil film icon Vijay’s fan group, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, is set to transition into a full-fledged political party, with registration scheduled for February. Following a general council meeting near Chennai, Vijay was elected as the party president, marking a significant move towards electoral politics. The party, yet to finalize its name, aims to actively participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with a primary focus on the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls in 2026. Vijay, who has maintained a strong connection with his fan base through various charitable initiatives, is expected to bring his popularity and appeal to the political arena.

The decision to transform Vijay Makkal Iyakkam into a political entity aligns with a trend of actors entering Tamil politics, following the footsteps of iconic figures like MGR, Shivaji Ganesan, Jayalalitha, Vijayakanth, and Kamal Haasan. Vijay, at 49 years old, joins a new generation of Tamil politicians, standing alongside DMK’s Udayanidhi Stalin and state BJP president K Annamalai. The move adds an interesting dimension to the political landscape, as the actor, admired for his on-screen charisma, steps into the realm of real-world governance.
