Afghanistan crisis: One of the most difficult airlifts in history, according to US President Joe Biden, on evacuations in the aftermath of the Taliban takeover

New Delhi: US President Joe Biden described the evacuation mission in Afghanistan on Friday (August 20, 2021) as one of the “largest and most difficult” airlifts in US history.
Faced with criticism for his handling of the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover, Biden stated that his administration will do everything possible to provide safe evacuation for their Afghan allies and partners.

“Let me be clear: any American who wants to come home, we will bring you home,” he said in White House speech.

“But make no mistake about it. This evacuation mission is risky. It poses risks to our armed forces and is being carried out under difficult conditions “The US President went on to say.

He also stated that the US government is keeping a ‘close eye’ on any potential terrorist threat at or near the Kabul airport, including from ISIS affiliates in Afghanistan who were released when the prisons were emptied.

There are 6,000 US troops on the ground.
Biden stated that the US has nearly 6,000 troops on the ground, including the 82nd Airborne Division, which is providing runway security, the Army 10th Mountain Division, which is standing guard around the airport, and the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is assisting civilian departures.

“I cannot guarantee what the final outcome will be or that it will be without risk of loss. But, as Commander-in-Chief, I can assure you that I will mobilise all necessary resources “Biden continued.

Gut-wrenching
Joe Biden described the past week as “heartbreaking.” He stated, “We’ve seen heartbreaking images of panicked people acting in desperation. It’s completely understandable, you know. They’re terrified. They are depressed and unsure of what will happen next.”

“I don’t think anyone — I don’t think any of us — can look at those pictures and not feel that pain on a human level,” he continued.

Biden’s remarks came as the Taliban deposed the Kabul government a week ago, after which US forces withdrew after 20 years.
