Potential Health Insurance and Retirement Benefits for Zomato and Uber Employees Under Consideration

Zomato and Uber staff might soon have access to health insurance and retirement benefits, according to government and labor union sources. Plans are underway to introduce welfare provisions for part-time employees engaged on platforms like Amazon, Zomato, and Uber. These measures fall within the scope of the 2020 Social Security Code and are expected to encompass accident, health, and retirement benefits.

A government official stressed the urgency of unveiling support initiatives for gig workers. Discussions with trade unions, gig platforms, and state representatives have informed this initiative. Ashwani Mahajan, an economic officer from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh group, highlighted the necessity of state safeguarding due to the growing exploitation faced by gig workers at the hands of employers.

The government’s preliminary steps could encompass state-funded medical and accident insurance, accompanied by a system to address grievances. These measures would entail employers contributing 1% to 2% of their annual earnings to a security fund. Over 290 million individuals have enlisted on the government’s online portal, where they provide details like biometric information, skills, and identity documentation for gig workers and unorganized labor.
