In India, 48 ‘Delta Plus’ Covid variant cases have been identified.

New Delhi: From 45,000 samples sequenced so far in the country, 48 coronavirus infections of the ‘Delta Plus’ type have been discovered, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of such cases at 20, the Centre said on Friday.

Tamil Nadu had nine cases of the Delta Plus variety, Madhya Pradesh had seven, Kerala had three, Punjab and Gujarat had two, and Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Jammu, and Karnataka had one each.

The Union government claimed that the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant is responsible for 90% of COVID-19 cases in India.

Covid variants of concern have been discovered in 174 districts across 35 states/UTs, with Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, West Bengal, and Gujarat having the highest number of cases.

The proportion of COVID-19 cases with concern variants increased from 10.31% in May 2021 to 51% on June 20, 2021, according to the report.

The government also claimed that both COVID-19 vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are effective against SARS-CoV-2 variants such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta.

It also stated that the country’s second wave of COVID-19 is not yet over, as 75 districts still have more than 10% prevalence and 92 districts have 5-10% prevalence of coronavirus.
