Coronavirus: India’s Omicron tally rises to 578, the highest single-day increase; 6,531 COVID-19 cases reported

On Monday, India recorded 6,531 new coronavirus cases and 315 deaths, bringing the total number of active cases to 75,841 and the death toll to 4,79,997. According to data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the country experienced the highest single-day increase in Omicron infections, with 156 new cases, bringing the total number of such cases to 578.

On Sunday, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh reported the first cases of the Omicron variant. Delhi had the most Omicron cases, with 142, followed by Maharashtra with 141, Kerala with 57, Gujarat with 49, Rajasthan with 42, Telangana with 41, Tamil Nadu with 34, and Karnataka with 31.

Meanwhile, the active caseload is currently at 75,841, a decrease of 925 cases in 24 hours. According to the ministry, the country also recorded 7,141 recoveries today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,42,37,495. The recovery rate is currently 98.40%.
So far, 141.70 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India as part of a nationwide vaccination drive. Meanwhile, the Centre has deployed multidisciplinary central teams in ten states that are reporting an increase in Omicron and Covid-19 cases or a slow vaccination rate. These ten states are Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Mizoram, Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Punjab, according to the document.
