‘Nayattu’ among shortlisted movies for India’s official entry to Oscar

The Film Federation of India is holding a jury screening here to select India’s official entry for Oscar nominations. The jury is chaired by director Shaji N Karun.

Among the Malayalam entries, ‘Nayattu,’ directed by Martin Prakkat, has been shortlisted. Other films on the shortlist include Yogi Babu’s Tamil film ‘Mandela,’ Vidya Balan’s Hindi film ‘Sherni,’ Uddham Singh’s biopic ‘Sardar Uddham,’ Assamese film ‘Bridge,’ and Gujarati film ‘Chellow Show.’

The jury of 15 will select and nominate one of the 14 films shortlisted for India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, which will be held in March 2022. Only if the film is nominated for an Academy Award will it be considered.

The survival drama ‘Nayattu,’ starring Nimisha Sajayan, Kunchacko Boban, and Joju George, has sparked interest across India. The screenplay was written by Shahi Kabir, and the cinematography was done by Shyju Khalid.

‘Jallikettu,’ directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, was the last film to be selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. However, the film was not nominated for an Academy Award. India’s previous official entries were Gully Boy (2019), Village Rock Star (2018), Newton (2017), and Visaranai (2017). (2016).
