Despite September Revival, Kerala Experiences 40% Monsoon Rainfall Deficit

Kerala, despite witnessing a brief resurgence of rainfall in September, has encountered an overall monsoon rainfall deficit of 40% during this season.

The Wayanad and Idukki districts in Kerala faced a substantial 56% deficit in rainfall compared to the average. Notably, the state witnessed surplus rainfall only in the month of September.

As of September 20th, the recorded rainfall for this month in the state amounted to 274.6 mm, while the figure stood at 272.7 mm during the same period last year.

With the exception of Idukki, Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Kottayam, all other districts experienced relatively sufficient rainfall in September. Interestingly, when juxtaposed with the first four days of September, which saw 51 mm of precipitation, the entire month of August registered only 59.6 mm of rainfall.

The monsoon season in Kerala featured significant rainfall deficits, reaching 60% in June and a notable 87% in August.

In light of these conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that the monsoon is expected to gradually withdraw by September 25th.
