Kerala Contemplates 25 Percent Hike in Prices of Essential Items Distributed Through Supplyco

The government-appointed panel responsible for determining the price adjustments for 13 essential items sold through Supplyco has finalized its recommendations. The panel suggests a 25 percent increase in the prices of essential items and recommends that the government invest more in establishing a chain of outlets known as ‘super bazaars’ to support Supplyco.

The report containing these recommendations is expected to be submitted by the end of the week. While the government proposed increasing the number of subsidized essential items from 13 to 16, the panel did not express a favorable stance on this proposal.

The decision to raise prices comes after approval from a recent Left Democratic Front (LDF) meeting. The government formed the panel, led by State Planning Board member Dr. Ravi Raman, to address the issue. The final decision on the price hike is expected after the government’s outreach initiative, Nava Kerala Sadas. However, there are reports suggesting that the decision might be postponed due to upcoming assembly elections.

The rates of these 13 items have remained unchanged since 2016. Supplyco faced criticism during the Onam season for the unavailability of subsidized essential items in its outlets. With the Christmas season approaching, it is anticipated that the government will take measures to meet the demands of customers.
