Significant Reduction in Multidimensional Poverty: NITI Aayog Report

In a remarkable achievement, a recent report from NITI Aayog reveals that a staggering 24.82 crore individuals in India transitioned out of multidimensional poverty over a span of nine years, from 2013-14 to 2022-23. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh demonstrated the most substantial decline in multidimensional poverty, according to the findings.

Multidimensional poverty is comprehensively measured by advancements in health, education, and standard of living. The NITI discussion paper indicates a significant reduction in multidimensional poverty in India, dropping from 29.17 per cent in 2013-14 to 11.28 per cent in 2022-23. This means that approximately 24.82 crore people have successfully transitioned out of this category during this period.

The national multidimensional poverty assessment takes into account concurrent deprivations in health, education, and standard of living, represented by 12 indicators aligned with sustainable development goals. These indicators include nutrition, child and adolescent mortality, maternal health, years of schooling, school attendance, cooking fuel, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing, assets, and bank accounts. The report reflects a substantial positive shift in India’s socio-economic landscape, emphasizing progress in crucial areas that contribute to an improved quality of life for a vast population.
