Alarming Gender Disparity Emerges in Ernakulam District: Birth Statistics Reveal Concerning Drop in Female Births

The Annual Vital Statistics study conducted by the District Economic Statistics Department in Ernakulam district, Kerala, has revealed a concerning trend in the male-female ratio. While Kerala, in general, has more women than men, Ernakulam district reports only 967 women for every 1000 men. The study, based on the birth and death reports of the previous year, highlights that out of the 39,226 births reported in the district, 50.83% are boys, and 49.17% are girls. The study emphasizes the potential consequences of fluctuations in the male-female ratio on the future population in social, cultural, and economic aspects.

This disparity in the male-female ratio in Ernakulam district raises questions about the factors influencing gender distribution at birth. Possible contributors include sex determination during pregnancy leading to selective abortion based on gender preferences, hormonal factors, and decisions regarding the desired gender of a child. The findings underscore the need for further examination and awareness to address the implications of such imbalances on the societal fabric and to implement measures promoting gender equality.
