Tripunithura Attachamaya Procession Commences with Mammootty as Flag-bearer

Today, the Tripunithura Attachamaya procession is set to take place, marking the commencement of the Onam festivities. The event will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while actor Mammootty will have the honor of flagging off the procession. Starting from Boys Maidani at 10 AM, the procession will traverse the city and return by 2 PM.

Named ‘Attachamayam Harithachamayam’, the Attham procession will strictly adhere to eco-friendly guidelines. The event will feature about 75 different art forms, accompanied by still-life displays. Over the course of ten days, the Tripunithura Municipal Corporation has arranged an array of cultural programs.

Historically, on the day of Attham, the king of Kochi would lead a grand procession showcasing his army and artistic heritage. After the merger of Travancore and Kochi in 1949, the traditional royal Atchachamaya procession was discontinued. Subsequently, the Kerala government transformed it into a widespread celebration involving public participation when Onam was declared the state festival in 1961.
