Soaring Onion Prices: A Concern for Consumers in Kerala

Consumers in Kerala are facing a concerning situation as onion prices hit record highs due to a decrease in imports. Just two weeks ago, onions were priced between 25 to 35 rupees per kilogram, but yesterday, the prices soared to 60 to 70 rupees per kilogram. At the Palayam wholesale market, the price reached 55 rupees per kilogram, a significant increase from last month’s 25 rupees.

Shallot and garlic prices are also witnessing a sharp rise. In the Palayam market, shallots were being sold at a staggering 92 rupees per kilogram, and garlic reached an unprecedented 164 rupees per kilogram. Local shops are now charging over 100 rupees per kilogram for shallots and over 170 rupees per kilogram for garlic.

Traders are predicting further price hikes in the coming days, creating concerns for consumers. Kerala primarily receives its onions from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Wholesale traders attribute the rising prices to low onion production in local agricultural centers, a situation exacerbated by climate change. Smaller traders anticipate that the prices of all vegetables, including onions, will rise with the onset of the Mandalakalam season. The last time onion prices surpassed 100 rupees per kilogram was three years ago, highlighting the severity of the current situation.
