Delhi Police Launches Probe into Deepfake Video of Rashmika Mandanna
The Delhi Police has initiated an investigation into the creation and circulation of a deepfake video featuring popular actor Rashmika Mandanna. The deepfake, a manipulated video designed to appear real, was widely circulated on various social media platforms, prompting the authorities to take action.
The FIR (First Information Report) has been registered against unidentified individuals under sections 465 (punishment for forgery) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act have been invoked in connection with the case. The FIR was filed at the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations Unit of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.
Law enforcement agencies have assembled specialized teams to probe the origin and distribution of the deepfake video. The investigation will delve into technological aspects, aiming to identify those responsible for creating and disseminating the manipulated content.
The Delhi Commission for Women has also taken note of the incident, issuing a notice to the city police to take appropriate action against the perpetrators. The deepfake video not only raises concerns about the misuse of technology but also underscores the potential harm such content can inflict on an individual’s reputation.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to use advanced forensic techniques to trace the source of the video and hold the responsible parties accountable.
