Kerala Assembly Becomes First in India to Pass Resolution Against Single Civil Code

Kerala has made history by becoming the initial legislative body in the nation to approve a resolution opposing the implementation of a Single Civil Code. The state’s Chief Minister clarified that the Sangh Parivar does not have the current civil code in their intentions.

The resolution, passed by the Kerala Assembly, highlights that the central government’s rapid and one-sided efforts to enforce a uniform civil code are eroding the secular essence of the Constitution.

The resolution argues that the Single Civil Code is a sectarian initiative aimed at disrupting societal harmony and undermining national unity. With unanimous agreement, the Kerala Legislative Assembly has urged the central government to avoid hasty actions and engage in discussions with various religious groups to establish a shared approach on matters impacting the entire population of the nation.

Previously, the Kerala Assembly was also the pioneering legislative body in India to adopt a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act. In December 2019, the Kerala Legislative Assembly collectively passed a resolution opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act.
