Financial Crisis Threatens Closure of Akshaya Centers Amid Government Inaction

Akshaya centers, initially conceived as a cornerstone of the government’s digitalization vision, are currently teetering on the brink of closure due to severe financial challenges. The offices facing this crisis are those that adhere to the government-mandated low user fees.

In 2018, service charges were introduced for Akshaya centers, with a provision for the fees to be revised every two years. Despite notable increases in operating costs—ranging from electricity and internet expenses to building rent and employee wages—the rates remained unchanged. The government maintained a steadfast position against adjusting the fees.

Recent actions by vigilance officials led to the apprehension of several privately operated centers that arbitrarily raised their fees. This development fueled discussions regarding allegations of Akshaya centers also imposing excessive charges on the public. According to the FACE (Forum of Akshaya Center Entrepreneurs), the government’s lackluster response in addressing the crisis has rendered the Akshaya Kendra establishments in the state ineffective and redundant.
