19th Asian Games Commence in Hangzhou with Spectacular Opening Ceremony

The 19th edition of the Asian Games kicked off in Hangzhou, China, with a dazzling opening ceremony that incorporated elements of artificial intelligence and eco-friendly technology. The ceremony was highlighted by a breathtaking futuristic light display.

In attendance were Chinese President Xi Jinping, International Olympic Committee Chief Thomas Bach, and Acting President of the Asian Olympic Council, Raja Randhir Singh. However, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur chose not to attend the ceremony in protest of the denial of visas to three wushu athletes from Arunachal Pradesh.

The Games torch was digitally ignited by eight Chinese Olympians. Following a brief and vibrant opening ceremony, cultural performances took center stage, concluding with a digital fireworks display. The sporting events are scheduled to commence actively from the following day.

Key Statistics:

  • Participation: A total of 45 countries from the Asian continent are taking part.
  • Athlete Count: An impressive 12,414 athletes are participating in the Asian Games 2023.
  • Indian Contingent: India is represented by 652 athletes, although 655 were initially selected. Unfortunately, three wushu players were unable to travel to China due to visa denials. This marks the largest Indian contingent to ever participate in the Asian Games.
