GST Imposed on Registered Post and Courier Services: Increased Rates Across Various Categories

Effective November 1, 2023, Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been applied to registered post and courier services in India. The GST rate for these services is set at 18%, with 9% allocated for Central GST and 9% for State GST. The revenue generated from these taxes will be evenly distributed between the central and state governments. This move follows the previous implementation of GST on Speed Post services.

As a result of this new regulation, there are notable increases in postage rates. For instance, sending a registered post weighing up to 20 grams will now cost Rs 26, up from the previous price of Rs 22. Similarly, sending acknowledgement cards will now cost Rs 30, compared to the earlier rate of Rs 25. Registered posts weighing up to 40 grams, previously priced at Rs 27, will now cost Rs 32. Postages weighing up to 60 grams will be charged at Rs 38, up from the previous rate of Rs 32.

Additionally, GST has been imposed on various other postal services across 27 departments. This includes book packets, unregistered parcels, service money orders, post boxes, and registered newspapers. Consequently, the charges for these services will increase in accordance with the newly implemented tax regulations.
